How NHS Dental Charges Work
NHS dental charges are set nationally and are the same at NHS dental practices throughout England. The amount you pay depends on the treatment clinically required to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy.
You normally pay one charge for each course of NHS treatment, even when more than one appointment is needed. If your treatment includes items from different bands, you pay only the charge for the highest applicable band.
The charges below apply from 1 April 2026.
These are NHS patient charges for England. Private dental fees are separate and are set by the practice.

The exact treatment provided will depend on your clinical needs. Further non-urgent treatment may form a separate course of care and require another NHS charge.

Replacing a Lost or Broken NHS Dental Appliance
A separate NHS charge applies when a lost or broken NHS denture, bridge or orthodontic appliance needs to be replaced.
£99.60 for one appliance
£199.20 for two appliances
This charge may apply even if you normally qualify for free NHS dental treatment or help with NHS costs.
In some circumstances, you may be able to apply for a refund—for example, if you took reasonable care of the appliance or paying the charge caused financial hardship.
Important Information About NHS Dental Charges

Could You Get Free NHS Dental
Treatment or Help With Costs?
You may qualify for free NHS dental treatment or help with part of the cost. Common eligibility routes include:
Being under 18
Being under 19 and in full-time education
Being pregnant
Having had a baby or stillbirth during the previous 12 months
You or your partner receiving certain qualifying benefits
Being under 20 and the dependant of someone receiving a qualifying benefit
Being named on a valid HC2 certificate for full help with NHS costs
Holding a valid HC3 certificate for partial help with NHS costs
An HC2 certificate provides full help with NHS dental charges. An HC3 certificate states how much you may need to contribute.
Not all benefits automatically provide free NHS dental treatment, and Universal Credit eligibility depends on your income during the relevant assessment period.
Check your eligibility before claiming free or reduced-cost NHS dental treatment. You may be asked to provide evidence of your entitlement. An incorrect claim may mean repaying the original NHS charge and paying an additional penalty.

Budget for Private Dental Care With Denplan
Denplan Care allows you to spread the cost of eligible routine and restorative private dental care through a monthly payment plan.
Denplan Care starts from £20.44 per month
Your dentist will examine your oral health, explain what the plan includes and confirm your personalised monthly payment before you join.
Depending on your individual agreement, Denplan Care can include:
Dental examinations where clinically necessary
Dental hygiene appointments where clinically necessary
Dental X-rays
Necessary fillings
Necessary extractions
Periodontal treatment
Preventive dental advice and therapy
Crowns, dentures and bridgework, excluding laboratory fees
Root canal treatment where included in your contract
Denplan Care does not normally include:
Laboratory fees and prescriptions
Treatment specifically excluded from your agreement
Specialist referrals and specialist treatment
Treatment carried out elsewhere
Orthodontic treatment
Dental implants
Cosmetic treatment
Sedation fees
Wisdom-tooth extraction
Treatment that is not clinically necessary
Denplan Care is a private dental payment plan and is separate from NHS treatment. Your exact monthly fee, inclusions and exclusions will be confirmed in your individual agreement.
